Intertextuality

John Stuart- modern media "incorporates raids and reconstructs"

Julia Kristeve- " any text is adsorption and transformation or another"

The theorists saying they are borrowing ideas from other places and reconstruct the nothing is original anymore there conventions are typical and can be tweaked.

Intertexuality- where a media text refers another media text

media texts-( films, TV, adverts) are a bit like mosaic of references to other texts, genres

It could be argued that no texts are truly original- they're a re-hash of previous texts- this links to post modernism

what elements in a text might show intersexuality?

Use of conventions from the original text- this might link to genre- elements that we'd expect in a specific genre/ sub-genre such as a specific narrative, characters.

Mise-en-scene elements- setting, costume, props, actors etc.

Technical conventions- imitating the style of the original- i.e through camerawork (shot types, composition), editing (style of editing, use of editing effects- black and white, filters)

Types of intertextuality

Parody- The intextuality refrences use the conventions of the original text in an absurd or rediciolus way to create humour  and maybe poke fun at the original text.

Pastiche- A bit like a parady, but te intention is more light hearted and not as mocking as a parady. often is a bit more respectful of the original text.

Homage- here the intertexual references show respect for the orginal- they aim to show how worthy it is. The copy is basically indicating how good the original was.

Intertextuality- audience pleasures
