Narrative in music videos and Andrew Goodwin Theory
There are 3 different types of music videos
- Narrative
- performance
- concept
A narrative is a spoken or written account of connected events which make a story line.
Narratives in music videos can be alike films in that there is a distinctive plot and characters acting to reflect the lyrics and genre of the song. However, not all music videos has these distinct plots or styles as some may decide to defy narratives to try and be more creative and engage the viewer more. A classical nareative is one which includes
Exposition- the beginning of the video
Rising Action- when the acting starts to take place
Climax- when the rising action is peaking and becomes more tense
Falling action- happens after the climax when the event has happened and going back to normal
Denouement- the action has gone back to normal
Narrative Arc- is a story which is extended or continuing storyline in episodic storytelling media such as television, video games , music videos and films with each episode following a narrative arc:
Set up
Conflicts
Climax
Resolution
Theorist Andrew Goodwin believed music videos can interpret/use meanings created in the song lyrics via the below:
Illustration- the promo basically illustrates the ideas/narrative in the song lyrics
Amplification- uses a key idea/image from the lyrics and develops it into a concept within the promo. A link remains between the lyric and the promo
Disjuncture- the promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or meaning- abstract. can create new meaning to the song
Music Videos can be linked to adverts as they can sell and advertise the band/ artist- this can be done through the soundtrack played in the background of a song
A variation of different types of camera shot can be used the promote adverts for example in Cadbury's adverts there is always mise en scene of purple which symbolises the company. This can also be used in music videos. The shot types used in the video , movement, point of view and framing. The promo is not just to advert the song but to sell the band/artist, who they are and what they are and to give a feeling emotion to the viewer.
Narrative types
- Linear
- Non linear
- Close
- circular
- single stranded
- multi stranded
synaesthesia
a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of colour
in songs the narrative rarely is complete and therefore often fragmentary.
fragmentary narratives may help the repeatability of promos
Andrew Goodwin suggest music promos can interpret/ use the meanings created in the song lyric in one of the following ways
